There cannot be a visible result without shown progress. The pottery of mine molded with a brush contains all that is of my life. In essence the porcelain pottery is a kind of a self-portrait. It is a container which holds my heart and mind. It is a great listener of my life story which I am grateful for.
The cracks and crevices on its surface are like the lines on the palm of my hands. It takes me a great deal of thought and care when I carve in the pattern on the pottery. An artist must never waver.
However, when I carve or cut out the patterns there are times when I am not entirely certain. For my pottery contains the life stories of others as well. I must have clear-cut answers to all the consults and questions. That is how you can be assertive.
Dalhangari is my latest and immersed subject. A simple yet concise design of Dalhangari leaves no room for my greed to embellish. When such greed takes place Dalhangari becomes something unnatural. My work consists of treating and layering Korean papers onto a canvas as a potter would spin his wheel to mold a pottery.
Then is painted and drawn in still-life motif to portray realism. If you look carefully, you will see that it has been erased then reworked in a repeated manner which can be regarded as, somewhat, elementary.
However, this is a technique of mine to portray the beauty from purity and simplicity which is harnessed by the actual Dalhangari. Engrafting the Korean paper is to emphasize such elements. A rough image seeming like an unglazed pottery, multiples representation of white and the delicate and natural cracks show a pottery floating in the middle of canvas.
The use of Korean paper to show the tradition and history of Korean culture in combination of the oil paints representing a more modern approach is my interpretation of harmony with East and West.
