Monkey Mona Lisa 2019 Oil on Canvas 72.7x53cm

Sungju Lee

DESCRIPTION OF ARTWORK

A White Porcelain with A Blue Dragon

Since the ancient times a dragon was a legendary beast of absolute power representing both spiritual and god-like image.  A dragon’s stance is confident and poised, flying through the high clouds with magnificent strength.  The five toes of a dragon represent the King and commoners were not permitted to own such image.  The background consists of 99% pure gold-leaf which portrays the splendor, wealth and prosperity a dragon represents.

Myeong Sun

Produced in the times of Chosun dynasty it is presumed to have gone over to Japan during the Japanese Invasion of Korea of 1592.  It was known to Japan as “Goryeo Da-wan” and was considered a masterpiece of its time.  A wood plank with definitive wood pattern was used along with multiple layers of oil paints to portray the texture of the Goryeo Da-wan.

The visible flow of the glazing and the definitions of the Apple Blossom petals were carefully portrayed along with the natural cracks of the glaze. The pure water needed to steep the tea acted as an inspiration for the background where the water drops were portrayed.

Untitled Series

For a while my main work has consisted of still-life pieces utilizing Korean cultural subjects and the need to engage in finding a new “me” has led to an extensive research and pondering of my direction.   The search for new material, subject and a new world of creativity led me to a Flea Market selling an antique book containing the old Hangul and scripts.  Convinced that this was the key which will open up the door to a new world of artistic creativity I searched deeper into the culture I, as Korean, adapted from and utilized my findings as a method to come to a creative, yet constructive work.

Untitled
